Sources, permissions & limits

This first edition selects six historical documents around Eric Hughes, Tim May, John Gilmore and the debates surrounding them. It is a curated reading room, not a complete archive or a claim to speak for the cypherpunk movement.

What you are searching

Search matches titles, named authors or speakers, editorial topics, our summaries, short quotations and the one licensed EFF full text. It does not search the unhosted body of every linked document. It uses literal words and phrases, not an AI answer generator.

Words, dates and attribution

Editorial introductions are newly written summaries. Quotation marks identify short source excerpts. Panel contributions retain their speaker attribution. May’s manifesto is ordered by its stated 1988 composition date, while its 1992 posting date is shown separately. No historical claims are silently turned into promises about current technology.

Reuse

Original EFF material may be redistributed under its stated copyright policy ↗; that permission does not cover everything EFF hosts. The 16 April 1993 EFF analysis is reproduced unchanged under CC BY 4.0 ↗, with our introduction and HTML formatting separate. Other entries contain summaries and brief excerpts only. Source access does not establish ownership or a blanket mirroring licence.

Privacy and availability

No login, wallet, analytics script, remote font or embedded player is loaded by the library. Search runs locally and places filters in the URL fragment, which is not sent in HTTP requests; a shared URL can reveal those filters to its recipient. Ordinary hosting infrastructure can still observe page requests. Linked source websites operate independently and may log visits, change or disappear.
