CS2 skins and gambling: value, custody and scam risks

A CS2 item, a Steam Wallet balance and money in a bank or cryptocurrency wallet are not the same asset. Treating them as interchangeable can hide fees, withdrawal limits and the risk of losing access to an item altogether.
A displayed item price is not a cash balance
Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement describes Steam Wallet credit as usable within Steam rather than as cash redeemable outside it. A price on an item page therefore does not establish what an external buyer will pay, or what you will receive after fees.
Third-party valuations can also vary with condition, item attributes, liquidity and the rules of the particular venue. A high advertised value is not evidence that a withdrawal at that value is available.
Identify who holds the item
If a third party asks you to transfer an item, establish who controls it afterwards and what contractual route exists to recover it. A website balance is only a record inside that service. It is not proof that a corresponding item remains reserved for you.
Read any trade restrictions, dispute procedure and withdrawal conditions before sending an item. Do not rely on a social-media screenshot showing someone else’s successful cash-out.
Watch the authentication and trade details
Verify the destination domain, inspect the recipient of a trade and avoid authentication links delivered through unsolicited messages. Never disclose recovery codes or approve a login you did not initiate. If a purported support representative asks you to transfer your inventory to a “verification” account, stop and verify the request through an independent official channel.
Do not confuse item wagering with match predictions
An esports match market has an outcome definition and a settlement source. A skin game may have a different randomisation mechanism, custody model and regulatory status. Only participate where legally permitted and age-eligible. Items can represent real expenditure, and losses remain losses even when a site presents them as entertainment credits. Do not borrow or chase losses.
